Moderate Color Fringing๐ Why Do OLED Gaming Monitors Have Text Fringing?
Operating systems like Windows 10 and Windows 11 use subpixel font rendering (ClearType) designed around the classic LCD RGB Vertical Stripe. When rendering a white letter on a black background, ClearType lights up adjacent Red or Blue subpixels to smooth out staircase aliasing.
However, Samsung QD-OLED places the Green subpixel on top and Red/Blue on the bottom in a triangle, causing a visible 1-subpixel green line above horizontal strokes and a purple/magenta line underneath. Meanwhile, LG WOLED adds a fourth pure White (W) subpixel to boost HDR brightness, creating gaps between colored subpixels on high-contrast letters unless moving to 4K 140+ PPI density or Gen 3 RGWB layouts.
