๐ What Is IPS & What Causes Mouse Sensor Spinout?
IPS (Inches Per Second) measures the maximum physical velocity an optical sensor can track across a mousepad before its internal digital signal processor (DSP) fails to capture frame-to-frame surface texture shifts. When tracking fails, the sensor spins outโoften looking straight into the sky or floor in-game.
Older optical sensors like the PMW3310 had a critical speed cap of ~130 IPS (~3.3 m/s). An aggressive swipe coupled with a slightly tilted mouse pad contact would immediately trigger a spinout. Modern PixArt sensors (PAW3395, 3950) employ high frame-rate CMOS cameras (up to 20,000 FPS), making spinouts virtually extinct unless dust obstructs the sensor prism lens.
