๐Ÿ“– What Is Key Chatter and Why Do Switch Contacts Bounce?

Metallic Leaf Contact Physics

When a mechanical switch stem presses two copper leaves together, they physically bounce against each other for 1 to 5 milliseconds before establishing stable electric contact. Without firmware debounce filters, a single keystroke would trigger 2-4 rapid duplicate letters ("hheeello").

Why Hall Effect Switches Have 0ms Debounce

Hall Effect (HE) magnetic switches use a permanent magnet in the stem and an analog sensor on the PCB. Because there is no physical metal-to-metal collision, magnetic flux changes continuously with zero mechanical bounce. This allows true 0.1ms rapid trigger and instantaneous reset.
