🌱 Carbon Offset & Hardware Longevity
By saving 90 Watts over 4 hours daily, you eliminate approximately 131.4 kWh and 52 kg of CO2 emissions annually. Cooler VRM capacitors and lower silicon operating temperatures can extend the operational life of your GPU by 2–3 years while significantly dampening high-pitched inductor coil whine.
How to Undervolt in MSI Afterburner in 4 Steps
Launch MSI Afterburner and press Ctrl + F to open the V/F (Voltage/Frequency) curve editor.
Select a target voltage point on the X-axis (e.g., 925mV or 950mV for modern Ada Lovelace RTX 40 cards).
Drag that point up to your target core clock (e.g. 2650 MHz), then select all points to the right and flatten them horizontally.
Run 3DMark Time Spy or Cyberpunk 2077 for 30 minutes. If stable, click the startup Windows icon to apply on boot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does undervolting a GPU reduce gaming FPS performance?
Almost never when done properly. Modern GPUs boost their clock speeds aggressively based on thermal and power limits (NVIDIA GPU Boost / AMD Precision Boost). By undervolting (e.g. locking 2700 MHz at 950mV instead of 1075mV), the GPU runs much cooler, which prevents thermal throttling and actually results in smoother frametimes and identical (or slightly higher) average FPS.
Can undervolting physically damage my graphics card?
No! Overvolting (pushing excessive voltage) causes silicon degradation and heat damage. Undervolting does the exact opposite: it feeds less electrical stress into the GPU die and VRMs. The worst that happens during testing is a game crash or driver reset if the voltage is set too low for a given clock speed.
Why do GPUs come with such high default voltage from the factory?
Silicon lottery. GPU manufacturers (NVIDIA and AMD) produce millions of chips with microscopic variance in silicon purity. To guarantee 100% stability on even the worst-binned chips, factories assign conservative, overly generous voltage curves. 95% of retail GPUs can easily shed 75mV to 150mV while maintaining rock-solid stability.
