The Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) defines the largest packet size in bytes that a network interface can transmit without needing to fragment the packet into smaller segments. Standard Ethernet uses an MTU of 1500 bytes.
For PPPoE (common in DSL and certain fiber ISPs), 8 bytes are reserved for the PPPoE header, capping MTU at 1492. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) like WireGuard or OpenVPN add between 40 to 80 bytes of encryption overhead, requiring MTU adjustments down to 1420 or 1380 to prevent micro-stuttering in multiplayer titles like Valorant, Apex Legends, and CS2.
